Dakota Fanning has defended her Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart over her fling with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders in an interivew with InStyle magazine.

The 18-year-old actress blasted the media coverage of the scandal which documented the break-up of Kristen and fellow co-star Robert Pattinson this summer.

Speaking in defence of Kristen, who she also worked with on the Joan Jett coming-of-age biopic The Runaways, she said: “Everyone thinks they have the right to, you know, publicise the struggles and sadness and heartbreak and all of that.

“It’s like, ‘Why do you think you are the authority to judge people’s experiences?”

Dakota is no stranger to scandal, having been embroiled in a number of controversies herself despite her tender age.

In 2006, the teen actress’ parents faced extensive criticism for allowing a 14-year-old Dakota to film a rape scene in Deborah Kampmeier’s Hounddog.

A Marc Jacobs perfume campaign advert featuring the young star was also pulled in the UK last year after the Advertising Standards Authority argued that ‘the ad could be seen to sexualise a child’.

Dakota defended her career choices, claiming: “I’ve always been drawn to material that’s more kind of heavy, you know?

“Whether it be dark or dramatic or sometimes disturbing. And that can be hard to do when people think you’re still a kid.”
